Kakalla – “Voice of Twilight, the ” – [Weltschmerz Records]East Coast jazz quartet (trumpet/guitar/bass/drums) cruises through the inventive twists and turns of leader Thomson Kneeland’s compositions. The pieces are highly composed, with several themes/sections developing in each one. They’ll start with ballad-type material, then merge into more active playing, then return to form? things like that. Airy trumpet lines dominate, and bassist Kneeland often takes a lead role as well. Nice ensemble work, and good blowing when the soloists are given a chance to cut loose. Overall Euro-jazz flavor; cool, gray, and forlorn, sounding quite a bit like some of the music (Kenny Wheeler, Gary Peacock, etc) on the ECM label. Comment on this review |
