Frost, Edith “It’s A Game” [Drag City]

It’s A Game doesn’t play around when it comes to intimate & deeply personal stories of love, heartache, and emotional longing expressed through Edith Frost’s gorgeous singing and slow lo-fi alternative country & indie folk-style music. There’s a sad sentimental quality to Frost’s undertakings but they’re surprisingly reassuring, hopeful, and soothing. She comes across like your wiser, more experienced best friend who’s conceivably been through it all. Yet despite her thoughtful understanding, sophisticated insights and worldly ways, there’s a lurking sense of disillusionment; one that ultimately still prompts her to actively seek a comforting level of solace and resolve. Having been through divorce herself, Frost’s lyrics are all the more heartfelt, endearing, & sincere. The resonating organ vibes, gradual drowsy guitar reverb, and sparse drum taps with hi-hat hisses create a lingering mood that swirls like a glorious winter’s day. Her voice is absolutely incredible, warm and inviting like morning sun pouring through the chill air. Edith Frost’s naked honesty and soft pleasing harmonies are enough to bring a joyful tear to your eye, like a melancholy music box’s sorrowful song. Everything is subtly crafted into perfect unison. It’s A Game is one of Drag City Record’s finest releases and a contender for album of the year, 2005. If you don’t think so, go get your heart broke you callous bastard.
