Der Blutharsch “When All Else Fails” [HauRuck!] {33 RPM}Der Blutharsch (or Dried Blood Stains, a.k.a. Snow Drenched in Blood) is the primary music project of Austria’s, Albin Julius. His remarkable talents lend themselves to creating haunted & ominously dark ambient neo-pagan folk music. Germanic tribal minimalism with pseudo fascist overtones and chilling chants also make an unusual debut. The hollow pounding vascular organs and drum thunder along with the tense orchestral strings also contribute a perceptibly wicked atmosphere, more than occasionally reminiscent of Aryan occult gatherings. Though Der Blutharsch is hardly anti-Semitic, neither is it glorifying Nazism through its compositional aims. The selections are slow swelling, ominous, and impending with an eerie aura of supernatural spirituality. Female & male vocals intersect in a radiant combination of surreal samples noises, ghostly ethereal soundscapes, and frigid abnormal arias. Sounds like this could be a soundtrack to some bizarre foreign flick that never saw the light of day due to its controversial content and questionable ethical implications. This is excellent music to execute under the veil of darkness until the night melts away, but would function tremendously from sunrise to sunset as well.

Well done. I would add that recent Der Blutharsch has taken a more boogie rock turn and could pass for Knifeladder or Birthday Party or Chrome or something like that. Comment on this review |
