dEbruit – “From The Horizon” – [Civil Music]

Pretty much guaranteed to plaster a big ol’ smile on
your ears. Brittany-born Xavier Thomas is deBruit
and has his radar and record collection pointed to
Africa. Hi-Life on his hifi, Zamrock in the patches
of his hammock, this music may be aimed at the disco
dancefloor but it swings warmly in the afternoon sun too.
Congotronics are lined up, vocoders are revived,
an ogene gong resonates along with ancient gods
speaking through autotune. Oh man, did I hear roto-toms
or are those some sort of squeeze drum samples? It’s
hard to tell where deBruit’s sound samples leave off
and he lurches in, but I’m pretty sure all of the
cheesey, warbly keyboards dropped and pitched wheeled
into the tracks are all deBruit. Check out what he oozes
all over the opening Gnawa roll on “Mega Wagna”, and
then to kick up the calories some kind of Bhangra
beckoning is chopped on top. The next track he melds
super squiggly synth with that sort of bumblebee
flute (it is a fula?). Sometimes the tightness of
the sampleness may wear you down, but a piece like
“Reve Du Niger” weaves a pretty amazing sound basket
with a few vocal threads. Killer finale as well,
freaky ethiopiquey! To state the obvious, he’s even
got a track called “Afro-Booty Musique.” Funderphonic
plunder.
