Fantomas – “Delirium Cordia ” – [Ipecac]

One long track, a relentless 74-minute nightmare composed by vocalist Mike Patton. It starts with the familiar sound of stylus on vinyl. Then the evil begins: wave after wave of total creepiness, little vignettes of horror are segued brilliantly, and there’s no way to prepare for what’s coming next. Malevolent drones, voices, wind, dripping noises, heavy breathing, deranged whistling, metal implements doing things that can’t possibly be anything but awful… Imagine being trapped in a sinister old gothic mansion all night long, fumbling in terror in pitch darkness for an exit, finding nothing but baffling hallways leading to hundreds of rooms, each one scarier and more awful than the one before. Worst of all, you know you’re not alone in there. Patton’s voice whispers, screams, cries, hums, spits, mumbles, and laughs, but there are no words. The other musicians (Osborne, Dunn, and Lombardo) contribute their own outbursts, many unpleasant jolts, like unexpected hands touching you in the darkness. And then there’s that obsessed ending: that stylus at the beginning now sticks in the run-out groove for 19 minutes. NINETEEN MINUTES. There’s a tiny burst of noise at the very end, but by that time you’re dead, you’ll never hear it. In short, don’t fall asleep with this CD on.
