Wall of Death – “Main Obsessions” – [Born Bad]

Did you see that skeleton in the paisley vest with the electric
twelve string? I thought I saw him in a shower curtain at
the Royal Baths show. And it feels like he’s walking through the
Wall of Death of this Parisian three-piece. A 2012 release that
looks back at the 60′s turning 70′s, psych driven but floated on
banks of keyboards (not just farfisa, but heavy duty, nearly church
organ grandeur at times). They sing in English, but mope in French
and they mope REALLY well. Delivering despondent but catchy numbers,
that have the shared vocals of Brice Borresto and Gabriel Auguste
cloaked in a thick reverb glaze. Here’s music than can and will make
a Black Angel scream. Frequently they let a song thin out (the
reverb still poured on) like in “Tears of Rainbow” before the cello
gives way to backwards guitar and then the drums kick back in. Bass
feedback whorls open up the title track. The 60′s vibe means there’s
plenty of blues whiffs and riffs (sliding dobro on “Believe Me or Not”)
and no shortage of fuses for fuzz boxes! The moan and drone harmonies
are what really won me over, check out their interplay on “From Hell
With Love”
