Loops Haunt – “Zenith” – [Black Acre]

Scotland’s Scott Gordon is the main man here, and I’m not sure if
he’s the haunted or the haunter. These very short pieces are
peppered with bits of spectral nostalgia, missing the good ol’
ghosts with the wavering wail of singing saws, the jingle of
jungle inside snow globes, and even traces of trancers
that have danced on to a lower plane. Tracks rise and die so
quickly, and that in itself is to be mourned. The opener “Fathom”
erupts with snare and cymbal, has a seance with some disembodied
voices and then vanishes like Houdini on a bad date. “mun Rhul”
starts in a haunted castle, and then over a kind of Mo’ Wax riddim
speaks with the digital dead. “Zenith” has the pitter patter of tiny
xylophone staircases between your ears with a housey hint of
an army of dead drum ‘n’ bassers. “dltfaypily” feels like a tiny
kids trolley that somehow winds up in this abandoned steampunk
train station for a stretch. “Heal” hides the singing saw in between
big dramatic beat steps. “Hike” is the sound of something scratching
behind the walls in a catacomb, electric piano shivers and rows of
empty boots marching. Songs are even shorter than they appear,
the bursts of creativity make them seem longer, certainly look
forward to more rounds from this Looper. Happy haunting…

Another fine Black Acre release… -Thurston Hunger
