Moloch – “Depressive Black Metal Plague” – [Prison Tatt Records]

Obviously this is not the sludge Moloch. It’s one of seven Molochs (really, seven) from various parts of the world who play black metal. This is perhaps the best known one (and certainly the most prolific, dude has so very many releases), a one-man project founded by Ukrainian Sergiy Fjordsson in 2004. The source of the name is an ancient Ammonite god to whom children may or may not have been sacrificed by fire. This particular Moloch plays ‘depressive-suicidal black metal,’ a subgenre distinguished by slow tempos, often very unpleasant high-pitched vocals, mind-swallowing buzz of a guitar tone, and lyrical/conceptual themes that stare unblinkingly into the abysmal heart of self-destructive depression. Prison Tatt, whose excellent series of one-sided 12″ EPs has recently seen releases from Demonologists, Ives, Lord Time and Glass Coffin (among others), have succeeded again here, allowing Fjordsson to present a kind of distillation of his patently Eastern-European musical vision with three remixes of tracks that originally appeared on 2010′s ‘Isolation Der Essenz’ and one new composition (A4), all showcasing a guitar tone in the icy recesses of which one might get lost for hours, and freeze. Hypnotic spirals of razor-edged psychedelia and the electrical crackle of depleted serotonin. The inescapable reality of one’s own death. Lie down in the winter woods and succumb. All slow, repetitive drumming; the word ‘dirge’ comes to mind. This is not metal to mosh to, it’s metal to curl up into a weeping ball to. As Prison Tatt themselves assert: “…if you’re not reaching for your razor by the end, you haven’t listened closely enough.” Not as dreamy as Dhampyr but still pretty fucking good. For lacerated fans of Burzum, Leviathan, Dispirit, Deinonychus etc.
