Kraus – “Supreme Commander” – [Moniker Records]

Newer Zealand guitar fueled instros, drum machine set on
warpath style, some real drums too. Check out the reverb
slap beat on “Mono Lulu.” Pat Kraus (formerly a Futurian)
is the man with the multi-track plan here. He adds in
synth sounding like a toy telephone from the 1980′s after
having watched Sun Ra. Some faux tape warble on “Mono Lulu”
and “On Stay Out” (likely a trick or tweak for those who
originally had this on a Dungeon Taxis’ cassette.) While
the last two tracks feel a little more galactic, much of
the album feels like a dirty spaghetti western instrumental
experimental film. Well, a noodlier version. But then “Summer
Is Icumen In” has a more floral, less scorched and parched
feel. But how can one not sing the praises of “Mysterious
Women?” Raw proto-psych seeds, all instro.
