Nicholas Desamory – “Like You” – [M=minimal]

It may be a stretch to tie this to Arthur Russell’s dance music, but
for some reason those two synapses light up when I listen to this.e
The album has a very clean, streamlined feel…definitely percolates
and the cello fits in nearly seamlessly. You get the sad bows on
“I Want To Be Like You” but the wind-up chimp mini-cymbals keep a
smile on your face. Breezy vox from different folks including
Nicolas’ wife drift in on various numbers. The opening feels like
Robert Wyatt with that clear blank voice (although the lyrics
are not Wyatt-worthy…). But check out the cello’s perky pluck
on “All the World” playing tag with little noise squiggles, all
leading towards a kind of Impulse Records 70′s jazz choir refrain.
Their descending chant of “All the World is gone” has a calm vibe
of relief instead of dire hopelessness. Harrowing vox (maybe Charles
Ndubisi?) on “Outsourcing the Strings” make that an excellent
dramatic number. The importance of the m=minimal imprint cannot
be undermined here, the songs have lots of still silent points,
where you feel like your just floating for a beat or two in a
motionless pool. You want happier times, go “Shopping for Free”
with Wynona Ryder, and Hanno Leichtmann as your wingman on the
hi-hat, and it ends with a weird sort of dobro fade-out. “Sold Out”
has a Neiman Marcus spiel to start. At this point in my life, the
chances of ever running a fashion show in Berlin (the hometown of
Nicolas Desamory nee Bussman) are getting slim, but this refreshing
music would go well with the women wearing neon synthetic tumbleweeds.
