Feehan, Mark – “MF” – [Siltbreeze]

Harry Pussy guitarist does his take on solo country blues improv, heard it before? Nope, not Bill Orcutt, here we have Mark Feehan with a very different approach:?? less of the mangled, stray dog feel and more simple, spacey improvisations droning delicately in their odd modal takes on Americana nostalgia. Don’t worry, we still have some brash attacks of noise punk electronics and broken locked-groove melodies on overdriven guitar for the last three tracks of side A, but for the rest, mash-up melody collages of glimmering guitar lines aimlessly gliding in and out of harmony, heavy on the delay, or sometimes just reverb. Apparently, Feehan recorded this album while traveling the world in a replica of Confederate submarine HL Hanley, so there is quite a sub-aqueous feel to a lot of it, just floating along. It does also reflect a somber, lonesome feel, like he’s keeping himself company with the subtle overdubs. The cover seems to suggest suicide, but Coco the Magical Bird will quickly snap you out of that thought!
