Ex, the “Singles. Period. (the Vinyl Years 1980-1990) ” [Touch and Go]Confrontational & intelligent post-punk Euro-socialists? Experimental Dutch noise punkers with the spirit of anarchism? Ever-evolving industrial improv, tribal rhythm, & leftist agitprop? Underground purveyors of anti-commercialized, independent, and truly alternative music, culture, & lifestyle? Uhhhhh, whaddaya think buddy?! YES! But that’s not all! And thanks to Touch & Go, the Ex’s vinyl release singles have been compiled into CD format. Several songs are short & sweet punk tunes. Other selections run five minutes and trip into industrial veins and post-punk dimensions. The Ex were (and continue to be) about adopting new ideas and expanding their sound. You have English and Dutch lyrics here, both with insightful socio-political standpoints. Some might be a bit dated, but the underlying message still rings true and serves as inspiration to aspiring artists in these ‘modern times.’ They are influential, provocative, creative, perceptive, and above all defy categorization. Everything punk & art intended to be from the start prior to being commodified. Comment on this review |
