    What We Live ??? Sound Catcher Jazz CD {Fire Museum}

    Recorded live at the Trinity Episcopal Church (N.Y.) you catch some improvised divine semi-standard jazz revelations straight from the Koran.?? OK so maybe it???s not a strict interpretation but the impassioned voice of Turkish singer Saadet Turkoz definitely belts out some stellar restructured religious recitations.?? She???s backed up by Lisle Ellis on bass & electronics, Don Robinson on percussion & drums, and Larry Ochs on tenor and sopranino sax.?? Turkoz seems to probe the tongue twisted realms of Diamanda Galas without resorting to raving tirades.?? You might say she???s more on par with vocalist Anna Homler who also engages in Galas styled inflections.?? The jazz improvisations move in slow motion, just lingering & morphing very slightly.?? This is nothing over the top & it???s definitely intent on sustaining a low-key ritualistic mood.?? Wish this could???ve taken off somewhere but I think this was meant to be a subtle stream of rippling sound & consciousness rather than a jazz jiving tidal wave crash.??????

  • Medicine and Duty ??? Flags and Cannons A-Library CD { Foolproof Projects}

    Bristling British mangling melded with impolite impromptu psych experimental noise rock from Brighton, U.K.?? Andy Pyne (Puffinboy, Raised by Wolves) and Matt Colegate (Raised by Wolves) do drum freak outs & guitar spasms respectively.?? Jack Cooper (Guillotines) also lends burnt bass bombs & synths sensations to the mix.?? All three scream ferociously & execute damaged invigorating tense blasts akin to no wave noise rock psych tinged synth seared stunners.?? Should you tingle at the sounds of Coughs, Melt Banana, Aids Wolf, Lighting Bolt, Acid Mothers Temple or Jackie O Motherfucker then you???re obviously turned on right now & need to find a cheap motel, do your duty and take this medicine??? warning, it doesn???t go down smooth & sweet.????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • [coll]: Local Anesthetic A-Library CD {Smooch}

    Originally released through Wax Trax Records co-owner Duane Davis??? Local Anesthetic label, you can still feel the sting of this fucking smashing collection of early 80???s?? out of print 7 inches boasting Colorado???s gloomy Siouxsie inspired goth rockers, bizarro art pop weirdness, post punkish damaged art wave, brash hardcore ala T.S.O.L., JFA or Los Olvidados, 77 style punk, new wavish synth tunes & more.?? Such a full sound & wide range o??? styles here.?? All very brilliantly produced (in part due to local Denver producer extraordinaire, Bob Ferbrache) & marvelously executed in that messy disaster stroke of genius sort of way.?? Bands include, Your Funeral, White Trash, Bum Kon, Nails, the Gluons with Allen Ginsberg & more! Really like Jeri Rossi???s sickly shrieking cover of James Brown???s ???It???s A Man???s World??? and by far the standout is the opening cut by the Frantix ???My Dad???s A Fucking Alcoholic???!?? Gotta love Smooch for digging this up!?? Oh, this is littered with bad language too!??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????   • Cashmore, Michael ??? The Snow Abides A-Library CD {Durtro / Jnana}

    Upon first listen to the Snow Abides I instantly thought ???Michael Cashmore??? was a new project name for David Tibet (Current 93) with dark trembling cabaret vocal croons sounding very similar to Baby Dee, Tiny Tim or Antony Hegarty (Antony and the Johnsons).?? Turns out I wasn???t far off.?? Michael Cashmore wrote, composed & performed most of Current 93???s music over the last 16 years.?? This is his mini solo release of soft black melancholy piano lovelies with several notable guests including Antony on vocals and David Tibet???s lyrics.?? Flute, cello, oboe, violin & viola provide touching woeful enrichment.?? Cashmore???s bare grief-stricken creations are beautifully bereaved & wonderfully emotive. ??It???s a warm embrace for those dejected lonely souls who have suffered the frigid existence of a world that???s turned a cold shoulder.?? The snow abides, as do I.??????????

  • DISFLEX.6 - “Slow Burn ” - [247 Records]

    Hip hop out of Northern Calif with laid-back beats and melodies behind some fresh lyrical talent. Nothing too urgent or in your face, and that???s OK. The production is by Jason The Argonaut and Elon.is, a team that knows how to make musical beats into actual song structures. Lyrics by Jason the Argonaut and Lazerus Jackson, with guest appearances by the rest of the Sunset Leagues emcee crew. I like the weird creepy vibe on #12. Worth checking out for sure.

  • Stargazer???s Assistant, The - The Other Side Of The Island A-Library CD {Aurora Borealis}

    Guapo percussionist David J. Smith and Miasma & the Carousel of Dead Horses cohort Daniel O??? Sullivan adopt samples, electronics, tapes & vocals plus harmonium, electric & acoustic guitar & sparse pounding clumps to envision this homage to the earth and its archival layers of time imprints & geological history prior to its reemergence as coal & the catalyst for the destructive Industrial Revolution.?? Basically this CD serves as a sonic illustration for these geological transitions & the exploits of human kind.?? It has this tainted atmospheric echoing sound sculpture.?? This breaches on dark ambient but with a slightly freakier experimental sphere of influence.?? The Other Side of the Island seems to bustle with clicks & miniscule groans, metallic tinges and psychedelic drones.?? Pretty unnerving at times but overall just extended sickly hovering atmospherics & low buzzing post-apocalyptic harbingers accent by numerous spacious effects.?? It???s best just to listen now & paint your own picture.??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • Kubisch, Christina - “Night Flights ” - [Important Records]

    A reissue of Christina’s album from the mid-80s. Tape
    loops & echoed effects, trumpet, glass bowls and glass
    horns, diverse field recordings, flute and
    electronics. An experimental ambient trip. Each piece
    makes your imagination go wild.
    The first, Cat’s Dream, lets you explore what little
    kitty sees in her sleep… from romping through the
    grass, vibrating insects, purring madly, and distant
    humans chatting.
    On track 2, you get the sense that a glow bug had a
    little too much rum. Lonely sounds of bubbling,
    bouncing, bumbling up and down. The crickets are so
    tired of that drunk.
    For the final track, Circles IIII, layers of slow
    oooooohhhh’s hypnotize you into a dizzy trance. A
    qualuded vocal choir. Meditating moans. Floating
    flute.

  • Es ??? Kaikkeuden Kauneus Ja Kasittamattomyys A-Library CD {Fonal}

    Es is simply Sami Sanpakkila from Finland.?? These recordings were comprised between 2001 ??? 2003 and released on Fonal in 2004.?? Sami seems to be a rather quiet & introspective individual with a grasp over the heavy hearted.?? You get that sense profoundly expressed through this release.?? Es probes the lugubrious depths of sorrow without falling into irreversibly utter despair.?? His lonely creations grieve & ache yet seem to carry sensitivity towards hope.?? Crestfallen chords play out upon piano, birds amongst treetops twitter & tweet sweet reveries, looped ambience, soft frail voices, windblown chimes, bell tolls & phonograph crackle, delay & tremolo effects overlap lapping water samples, gentle organ tones & other natural found sounds & field recordings.?? This is just as beautiful & melancholy as Stars of the Lid, Brian McBride, or Johann Johannsen.?? Very lovely.????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • Bludtfart ??? Live On Outerspace Or Rock Music From The Heart Of Pureshit A-Library CD {Dolor Del Estamago}

    Bludtfart applies the adhesive stickiness of Rubber O??? Cement & the jumbled disorderly mishmash muddling mucked on by Patch Kordzz.?? Tortuous mocked versions of classic rock hits & new wave singles devoured, digested & regurgitated into saliva soaked synth punk.?? Comparisons to Culturcide aren???t far off, but rather than sing cynically sarcastic lyrics karaoke style over the original tune, Bludtfart does obliterated bludgeoned covers.?? It???s a real messy live recording indulging squealing feedback electronics & video game pong psychedelics, tattered & torn drum assaults, nervous bass anxieties, annoying harmonica bleats, nasty kazoo wheezes, heavy analog buzzing and god awful tone deaf insane asylum sing song ravings.?? It???s a belligerent, perturbed & disturbed off tune, tone deaf disco dance punk piss fest queasy noise nightmare intended to offend your mainstream sensibilities.?? These guys obviously hate rock and roll and relish destroying its aesthetic phoniness by hacking it to pieces & reanimating the corpse for one last pitiful hurrah.?? Covers, if they be called such, include Tony Joe White???s ???Polk Salad Annie,??? KISS??? ???Rock and Roll All Night,??? The Beatles??? ???I Am The Walrus,??? Deep Purple???s ???Smoke On The Water??? & more.?? Plus, I think there are some original songs too but who knows??? • Harnetty, Brian - “American Winter ” - [Atavistic]

    Harnetty, Brian ???American Winter??? full length

    Field recordings, old radio airchecks and interview material culled from the Berea College sound archives of Appalachian culture, combined with newly recorded instrumentation including toy piano, banjo, harmonium, fiddle and other bright shiny sounds to make a New Weird America out of the old one. Snatches of song go in and out of synch; announcers introduce things you may never get to hear. The result is a stroll down a remote country path with angels and devils hovering nearby, should you fall dead in your tracks unexpectedly.

  • Birchville Cat Motel - “Seventh Ruined Hex ” - [Important Records]

    Eschewing all shimmery or hyper-rock amptones, Cammpbell Kneale spreads a generously dense, searing dronecrusher in five relentless parts. Do yourself a favor: Feast your eyes on the liminal photos inside this mini-gatefold while the record is playing. The palpable tension in the air molecules eminating forth from speakers are a perfect juxtaposition! I asked Campbell about the context. Supposedly it’s a Javanese ritual wherein these people actually feign suicide to cut the demons, who have infested them, out of their bodies. Matthew Bower (Pure, Total, Sunroof, etc) lends a hand, heaping blissful chaotic guitar sludge as only he does best.

  • Kaiser, Henry/ Day, Kiku - “Zen Kaiju ” - [Balance Point Acoustics]

    The scene: a pointillist Zen saloon somewhere on the Western Bardo Plain. In bursts Gamera, lookin??? to brawl with Billy the Mountain. Lee Van Cleef tells him to cool his chops and have a sip of sake. Several cauldrons later, while trying to distinguish up from down, they notice the music in the barroom. ???Say, who???s that slingin??? the ???lectric guitar???? rasps Van Cleef. ???Why, that???s that Kaiser boy, Henry???, coughs Gamera, ???and tootin??? the Japanese flute is that Kiku Day gal. I???ve always been a sucker for the shakuhachi. It???s in my blood, I guess.???

    As they stumble through the swingin??? doors out of the tavern, arm and arm, and down the dusty street, the music rips and tears gaping holes in the sky, and the double suns set into the east.

    Experimental improvisation for acoustic or electric guitar and shakuhachi. The soundtrack to your next imaginary soba noodle western.

    Stuck on the bottom of the black Mississippi mud. Pulled free with Fahey???s 4-wheel drive & a rope. Slow crawling snake charming shaman drifting radio-tube/transistor dustbin drone under raga fogger lo-fi guitar; buzz, strum, shimmer and shake, Mr. Lungfish Higgs. Indian classical hobo camp mulligan stew-on-a-stick. Appalachia bird-dog echo box blues. Fuzzy barbiturate tales of hallucinatory melancholy. • Baker, Aidan - “Sea Swells a Bit…, The ” - [a Silent Place]

    Three long beautiful atmospheric tracks. Aidan Baker
    is from ambient-doom duo Nadja. Deep hypnotic
    mind-swelling dreamy drones. Guitar textures, tape
    loops and drifty drum machines. Each track feels like
    glistening waves as the layers gently push forward and
    fall back within themselves. Would fit it well with
    the likes of Eno’s ambient albums or Stars Of The Lid.
    It definately feels like you’re flying through the
    Grand Canyon drowning in sunkissed dew drops. Very
    peaceful and relaxing.
