Psychic Ills ??? Mirror Eye {The Social Registry}

NYC experimental tribal psych.?? Electronic, percussive, spacious, atmospheric & trippy.?? Panning buzzes & spilling synth waves, anxious delayed guitar strums, echoed vocals & totally stoned out to start.?? Higher conscious lava lamp LSD trip turns to an ascending & descending alarm frequency with front to back whoosh loops.?? Then it submerges back into the mind expanding, slow pulsing head space.?? Psychic Ills reprise weird experimental touches here and there but keep the psychic vibe otherworldly & druggy mostly.?? These Brooklyn sickos also have Psychic energy with Effi Briest.

  • Machinefabriek + Vitiello, Stephen ??? Box Music {12K}

    Machinefabriek (a.k.a. Rutger Zuydervelt) and Stephen Vitiello trade off & combine tonal talents with simple natural objects as well as manufactured goods & food.?? I suspect droning minimal experimentalism will grasp & pull you in.?? What will keep you are the amazing aural results using bare basic materials.?? One track uses bells, books, tinfoil and buttons to create the lurking atmosphere though I hear rain sounds & such so I feel more is seeping into your ear canal.?? Cassettes & a broken record, chocolate sprinkles & field recordings, a crackle box & a plastic bag, rock & a thumb piano??? they provide the unique sounds whilst Machinefabriek & Stephen Vitiello sculpt & layer them in organic & electronic fashion.?? The tones & frequencies are delightful to discern & experience.?? This little music box rocks, in a manner of speakers.

  • Pains of Being Pure at Heart, The ??? s/t {Slumberland}

    Passionate youthful dreamy NY indie pop perhaps boasting a bit of shoegazing goodness & some gritty distorted feedback.?? Love the sorta Smiths bass punch with the Morrisey-esque vocals.?? They???re lively well crafted songs works tremendously because they don???t simply stop at the revved up tunefulness of the Smiths.?? Pains of Being Pure at Heart also kinda pull some Low energy with lovely female back up vocals and a push for louder boundaries.?? I also hear the chimerical splendor of Deerhunter shining through as well as some shimmers of early Jesus & Mary Chain.?? It???s not just lazy hazy dream pop.?? This really sparks some electricity. Such a truly splendid indie offering is this & sure to mesmerize, envigorate & get stuck in your head all damn day long.

  • Christ On Parade ??? Loud and Live (KFJC PIT 8-15-2007) {Prank}

    Reformed & reunited East Bay hardcore legends Christ On Parade stopped into the KFJC Pit in 2007 and belted out blistering buzz saw punk with a vicious bite & venomous socio-political screams for Loud and Live. These guys were or still are in bands like Teenage Warning, Grinch, Neurosis, Treason, Blister, Hellbillys and Econochrist. Fast, furious & full o??? piss & vinegar this ripping live set was released on Prank records. Christ On Parade play a heroic pummeling set. They???re also on KFJC???s Live From The Devil???s Triangle Vol. 10. Enjoy!

  • Grimm, Larkin ??? Parplar {Young God Records}

    A lovely, intelligent & musically talented anarcho-environmentalist & Yale graduate. Holy smokes! What a voice! Such a gorgeously brilliant musician is she. I flatter profusely only because she deserves to be both recognized and wholly experienced. What a mysterious enchanting young soul is Larkin Grimm. She released her debut & follow up on the amazing Secret Eye label before Young God founder Michael Gira signed her for her third stellar relase called Parplar. This is not the first Secret Eye artist Gira has set his sights upon and with good reason??? they discover major talent particularly in the psych / experimental / freak folk realms. That is precisely what Larkin Grimm accomplishes here with some additional assistance from Fire on Fire, Arrington de Dionyso, & Michael Gira. She engages with country washboard fervor, sailing haunted vocals, munchkin quails & bird whistles, subtle acoustic beauty & unusual yet beautiful tunes with odd mouth sounds & murky mystery. Larking Grimm culls a Renaissance repertoire that is astonishingly artistic & structured perfectly to please as well as puzzle. Absolutely entrancing! She is also featured on KFJC???s Live From The Devil???s Triangle Vol. 9

  • NoBunny ??? Love Visions A-Library 12??? {1-2-3-4 GO!}

    Y???know if Charles Manson was congested and squeezed his nose between finger & thumb and you asked him who he was I???m sure he would???ve played one of his tricks and said, ???I???m Nobunny.????? Silly kids!?? This white rabbit is really Nobunny & he trix out his solo sound wallop on white vinyl.?? Combine a lo-fi Ramones punk aesthetic with hand claps and a touch o??? Casio preset beats.?? Now heap on the rock ???n roll crooning of Haskil Adkins, slather on Joey Ramone???s bleating & hiccups & pepper in some Mel Blanc, Screamin??? Jay Hawkins, Chuck Berry & Jay Reatard. Plunge down the rabbit whole Alice & slide on the bunny mask, Frank, and pop your eyes & ears open to the NoBunny Love Visions.?? It???s a tweaked punk rockin??? passion explosion plus some rip rockin??? tunes!?????? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? FCC???:?? A5 (Erection)??

  • [coll]: Eat Skull / Ganglians {Dulcitone}

    Y???know what in the hell is this Eat Skull doin??? streamin??? outta Portland, Oregon or Ganglians oozing outta Sacramento, CA?!?? Shit, this belongs on some permanent vapor trail broadcast loop in my floating misty pink tangerine tinged dreams, soaring over purple mountaintops & drifting above a turquoise green sea.?? Even when Eat Skull???s medicated calm becomes a little queasy it???s still a killer cosmic trip.???? I still think Ganglians was searching for higher consciousness when they record this psychedelic acoustic sing along romp into the inner psyche.?? Dude, both bands are like pleasant sonic pulses from a blazing fiery fragrant orange blossom gently permeating the soft, smooth atmosphere. ?? Split the difference between this ultra catchy mid tempo psych pop.?? Say it sounds like the Beach Boys & Joey Ramone harmonizing over musical musings by Ariel Pink, Mattress, Ape Has Killed Ape & Panda Bear!?? Say it!!?? Sounds like a winner to me!!!

  • [coll]: Country Teasers / E-Zee Tiger {Holy Mountain}

    Country Teasers:???? I???m confused by the Country Teasers.?? They do odd repetitive rock that???s sorta like Gibby Haines doing subdued Butthole Surfer weirdness over an off-kilter country-styled Sun City Girls set to a tick tock clock rhythm. Or maybe it???s a Calvin Johnson tweakazoid trip with the Residents in tow.?? There are some kooky interludes, saxophone bleat & a phone ring sample that had me looking to see who was calling.?? It???s cool but hard to tell if they???re serious or just presenting some mondo weird gag about drugs, themselves and there being no future.?? Fuckin??? weird but you???ll still get a good kick out of the oddness.?? I heard they???re Scottish??? Yeah, right.

    E-zee Tiger:?? He goes by Anthony E-zee Tiger & plays solo.?? Strike that he???s a one man self-destruct unit screaming & shrieking while gripping a mic and throttling his guitar.?? He loops it and throws down a buzzing wavering thwomp signal then kicks in some panic plodding beats and creates mischievous sonic attacks that eventually ups the volume & blows out everything into a distorted sickly staggering ??psychedelic noise rockin??? mess.?? It???s fairly fucked up.?? Did you know this Michigan man also helps Hospitals and Paik people??? ???s true!

  • Topaz Rags ??? Tarot Harem {Not Not Fun}

    This enchanting little slab o??? wax came straight from the upscale hood of Eagle Rock (L.A.) and dammit it???s nifty.?? Why??? Well, this trio turns out a trippy psychedelic tribal deal using a bass, drums & piano with some shakers & echoey vocals to boot.?? Between the odd & lovely mouth sounds & moans, pleasant chimes and the simple hypnotic rhythms & melody I???m dumbstruck.?? It???s a pretty mellow glazed haze but tensely haunted??? almost Pocahaunted, as they share the same stomping grounds & some members.?? The dazed energy off of this is fantastic.?? They???re not just playing??? they???re really getting into something almost magical.?? Don???t think so??? Fuck it, go hang yourself then.

  • Riistetyt ??? Tuomiopaiva {Havoc}

    OK, so there was this Finnish punk band who called themselves the Cadgers before renaming themselves Riistetyt and immortalizing their aggressive sound as Finland???s most brutal hardcore punk ever recorded on wax.?? They???ve reformed & still play shows but when this was recorded it was 1984 and this Havoc re-issue gives you two extra songs that weren???t on the 4 song Kill City Records original issue.?? Heavy riffing, battered snare snaps & kick blasts, crunchy bass gristle and frenzied Finnish screams.?? There???s signature 80???s hardcore feedback, menacingly repetitive distorted doom guitars & some occasional favoring of echo effects.?? It???s good but doesn???t blow me away like it should.?? Die hard fans of Discharge, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Effigies, 7 Seconds & Negative Approach should slam dance & pump their fists to this.

  • Tuymans, Luc / Balka, Miroslav ??? Crazy Horses {Ultra Eczema}

    This is two guys just horsing around. Seriously. No, dude, they are literally & figuratively horsing around on this recording, no joke or trite summation. Not good enough, huh? OK, so the story goes that renowned Belgian artist Luc Tuymans & Polish sculpturist Miroslav Balka fidgeted around with a hand held cassette recorder at the Fundacao de Serralves and Porto Palacio Hotel where an art exhibit called ???Privacy??? occurred in 1998. The two men jostle the recorder around in the garden & inside the building, which they refer to as being ???shit,??? that housed the show. What started as a fun mouth mimicking of running horses & hooves turned into humorous asides & more wild, untamed & crazy horses. They comment on the quality of equestrian noises they make, ???Oh, that???s good!??? They pause & ask, ???Where??? the mic? How are you? Did you enjoy the show???? before returning to another round of whinnies & laughter. There???s a lot of mic commotion, heavy breathing, a woman questioning in Spanish, Everything ButThe Girl???s club hit ???And I Miss You??? playing briefly as background as these men clock their tongues, massively inhale, squish sticky cheeks together & let out meows amidst the neighs. It???s quite an amusing and bizarre sort of competition. This one-sided vinyl is limited to 500 copies and has an etched drawing on the non-playable surface by Tumans & Balka.

  • Mahjongg ??? Free Groove Rider {K Records}

    Chicago???s known to get freezing ass cold or sweltering muggy hot.?? Mahjongg knows this & it seems they opt for heat.?? Sometimes they duck into a boiling sweaty tiki lodge & drop a mildly spicy jungle flavored tune dipped in dubstep & chic cheap synth melodies with a ripe & juicy vocoder vibe.?? Sometimes it???s a slow-roasting Afro-beat island groove they dole out when concocting delicious blends of experimental dub, synth clap beat electronica & minimal tropicalia.?? These guys have got it made in the shade so have some fun in the sun & soak this in.

  • Girl Talk ??? Bone Hard Zaggin??? {333 Recordings}

    Greg Gillis is an audio terrorist, hijacking other folk???s songs & forcing them at gunpoint into compromising positions.?? This Pittsburgh provocateur procures modern music samples under strict copyright & thinly disguises them into novel dance floor gems or mischievous mash ups.?? This illegal art proves an unlikely yet hilarious hob nob of???? suspects from the music industry mainstream.?? Most of the fun comes from dissecting the meticulously crafted hodge podge of the 80???s, 90???s & 2000???s, recognizing the sample & appreciating its clever combination with other top o ??? the pops selections.?? Kanye West, C&C Music Factory, Digital Underground, Jay Z, Petey Pablo, Beyonce Knowles, Lloyd Banks, Bananarama, Cam???ron, Hall & Oates, Smashing Pumpkins, Salt ???N??? Pepa, Michael McDonald, Nirvana, Ce Ce Peniston & 2 Live Crew among others get to have a playful rough & tumble during this audio orgy.

  • Sagan ??? Resisting Pleasures {333 Recordings}

    Blevin Blectum (Blechdom From Blectum) & husband Jay Lesser (Matmos) along with Wobbly & video visual whiz Ryan Junell formed Sagan and released this limited lovely in 2006.?? Figure that this is trippy experimental electronica with peculiar sample sounds, heavy bass buzz bursts & a solid but occasionally stuttered glitch beat.?? It also introduces plump rubbery synths with paunchy rhythmic sway, fluttery omnichord sounding melodies & crisp mid tempo beats & some weird little vocals.?? It???s catchy.?? It???s cool.?? It???s fun & sorta funky.?? 333 copies exist of this instrumental exercise in pleasure resistance.

  • Sisters ??? Everybody {Parts Unknown}

    Sisters be two guys & one gal from Olympia, WA.?? I know, bummer, you wanted them to all be lipstick lesbo siblings who play with each other like they play their instruments,?? fingering each other on stage & off.?? Well, *POP!* burst that little bubble right now sailor.?? Anyways, the record is Everybody and these Sisters play gritty grungy garage raucous rock.?? It???s a mashing of gnarled yet tuneful indie rock, diseased feverish guitar pop & discordant feedback.?? I kinda suspect you???d get this shoved into a pigeonhole with Sonic Youth, Pavement, Thee Oh Sees, My Bloody Valentine, Calvin Johnson, Dinosaur Jr. & those sorts of folks??? which is good company to be in.?? This trio is awesome & has raw intensity & a jagged sound for two guitars, drums & incensed screaming.?? Great and recorded at K Records!????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • Tenth To The Moon ??? s/t {Stickfigure }

    Tenth To The Moon is Atlanta, Georgia???s boisterous stew of pseudo-industrial power percussion, synth encrusted no wave & plodding knee-jerk post punk with pestering polluted experimental sounds.?? This is Mitchell Foy???s project following Pineal Ventana???s demise. ????Incensed ravings & bizarre electronic rhythms manifest profound sound seizures.?? Broiling relentless anxiety & encroaching apocalyptic frustration makes this feverish, sample-prone, art-damaged industrial-psychedelic experience a challenging yet gratifying debut. ????This was mastered by James Plotkin & very reminiscent of the Vanishing, Savage Republic, Tuxedomoon, Foetus & Suicide.

  • Fang Island ??? Sky Gardens EP {Corleone}

    Fang Island sounds like some mysterious, magical, mythical jungle sanctuary with deep chasms, gargantuan prehistoric creatures, treacherous jagged mountains and murky swampland just a hop skip & jump from King Kong???s Skull Island.?? It???s just the sort of place to metamorphose out of some child???s vivid overactive fantasy world.?? Sky Gardens is the X-marked spot on a treasure map whence this upland Brooklyn quintet eek out their marvelous snapped up instrumental monster rock.?? Ultra zippy & vigorous indie rock, neo-pop, progressive post-rock, math rock & melodic hardcore with soaring solos harmonizing above the crashing heavy undertow and slapdash tuneful vocals.?? Fang Island seems to hold the diverse shape & color of such distinctive species as Fugazi, Deerhoof, Pink and Brown, the Advantage, Battles & the Mae Shi.?? This ought to have you feeling supercharged & ready for some action & adventure.?? Expert musicianship & lively precision playing that is loose & limber. Very, very good stuff.

    Cacaw is semi-sluggish yet aggressive undulating throbs o??? threatening noise rock disbursed in distressing bellicose fashion.?? Those two play bass & guitar plus a can o??? coins along with Zack from Lovely Little Girls on double-bass guitar & Kyle from Slut Barf assailing & assaulting on drums.?? Both Carrie & Anya just shriek out ferociously volatile screams with the rest engaging in uber distorted, crushing, spastic pulse patterned mayhem.?? Deranged dreams, mind control, demon possession & frothing rabies triggered barks over doom-laden lumbering noisy death metal aggro-stutters! This is seven short, fast & loud bursts of hardcore punk, stoner sludge, black metal combos with weird little sound effects & audio samples of Madonna & some goofy Hooked on Phonics commercial.?? They fuckin??? devastate everything, sound huge & are pretty tight despite the tattered blaring mayhem.?? They kinda have a sorta Filth vibe mixed with Blatz, Slayer & Brainoil.?? You know they???re having fun playing & fuckin??? shit up too.?? Funny thing is they also show a good sense of humor & don???t take themselves too seriously; with a hilarious song like Grand Slam Pancakes it???s pretty obvious.?? Two vicious little nasties outta Vancouver, BC Canada.

    Shearing Pinx has some noisy rocking squelch spasms dished out by three manic members who waver & shriek & skronk on bass & pummel the shit out of their drums.?? Experimentally aggressive noise punk with a funky agitating locked groove??? perfect!

    ??Stamina Mantis goes nuts in a completely different manner.?? They slowly release some pent up frustration before going bonkers on cymbals & toms.?? They tweak weirdo electronics & seethe like a festering wound as they hoarsely blurt out deranged blathering & curse like sailors.?? Venomous oblong & perturbed noise punk.
